A short video dive into Federico Faggin’s views on the fundamental differences between human and machine nature. One of the architects of our digital world, Federico Faggin developed the first commercial microprocessor that helped spark the digital era of modern computing and AI, so he knows a thing or two.
Faggin posits that the defining line between humans and computers is consciousness, an inherent property of the universe that allows for subjective experience rather than mere data calculation.
In Faggin’s view, machines efficiently process objective electrical signals, but remain essentially meaningless “zombies” because they lack qualia, the subjective qualities of experience that give sensations their felt character. Biological life, by contrast, operates as a holistic quantum system capable of navigating ambiguity and expressing true creativity.
Ultimately, Faggin argues that AI can only ever imitate human behavior because it lacks the inner life necessary to turn information into wisdom or purpose.
And that leaves the more interesting question:
If AI can never be us, what does it teach us about ourselves?
